In the Bodhisattva tradition, being of greater benefit to those around you, often begins with benefiting yourself. Vivekan & Jess invite you to enjoy a complete weekend of self-nurture. Vivekan and Jess’ retreats are renowned for garnering great guests. Newcomers have always felt welcome. Bring a friend and/or make new ones, or do your own thing!

About Vivekan & Jess

Vivekan is the founder and director of Park Slope, Brooklyn’s Bodhisattva Yoga (www.BodhisattvaYoga.com). He was originally certified under a direct disciple of Swami Satchidananda and has since studied with many teachers of varying traditions. He has especially been inspired by teachers from Tibet, China, India & the West. Synthesizing these influences, Vivekan has created his own unique brand of yoga instruction. Think well-sequenced, energetic Vinyasa flows imbued with an awareness to form, breath, Buddhist thought and acceptance. His meditation instruction, and broad yogic knowledge in general, enriches his students’ experience with his ability to tie yogic philosophy with ordinary, everyday experiences.

Jess received her teacher certification under Vivekan and continues to apprentice under his guidance. She draws inspiration from her practice, her teachers and the Dharma. Among students and private clients she is known for her warmth, encouragement and her ability to share her personal tips, tricks and hacks to make life off and on the mat a little more laid back and rock star.

Vivekan and Jess infuse their Bodhisattva Yoga blend with their studies of Buddhist thought, and expertise in yoga, ecology and green living. Vivekan has been featured on such popular media outlets as MTV Brazil and Channel 9 News, and inside the pages of Time Out NY. June 10-12, 2011 – Paula Lynch

Title: Paula Lynch
Location: Heathen Hill

Description

Join Paula Lynch for a fun weekend of yoga, deep relaxation and fresh garden delights this June! We will practice intensely in the morning and afternoon and eat some incredible, home cooked meals in the evening. Our morning practices will include asana and pranayama and will ask you to push your limits a bit, to explore and play; the evening practices will include inversions, restorative and yoga nidra.

Practicing in the beauty and peace of the mountains, especially at Heathen Hill, helps us access the playful and curious side of the body-mind complex, eventually leading us to that quieter and more peaceful inner space that can be difficult to abide in without this type of exploration. You are invited to come explore and play in your practice and nourish yourself with good food, rest and relaxation on this weekend retreat!

About Paula

Paula Lynch is a Yoga Works Certified Instructor affiliated with the Yogaworks Teacher Training programs. Her teaching style is influenced largely by the meditative flow and heat of Astanga yoga and the precision and playfulness of Iyengar yoga.

She studies with Genny Kapuler and Alison West, and has been able to shape her experience of the world through her asana practice. She studies anatomy and kinesiology and applies this knowledge to her understanding and teaching of yogasana in her classes through breath and alignment.

Paula’s teaching style expresses that yoga is an incredible technique that can give us access to the layers of our physical and energetic bodies that can only be experienced through patient and intentional practice. She practices yoga as a form of devotion, prayer and self-study and understands yoga as so much more than physical – it is cellular, mental, intellectual and spiritual involving our entire being.
We’ll start with a one hour practice late Friday afternoon followed by dinner.

Marisa Sako – Summer Sattva Part Deux – June 4 – 6 2010

Title: Marisa Sako – Summer Sattva Part Deux

Location: Heathen Hill

Description:

Come away upstate to lush pastures overlooking a gorgeous green valley. Unwind, relax, reinvigorate. Revel in four of Marisa’s energizing and creative vinyasa yoga classes with emphasis on alignment and ending with deeply restorative savasanas. Enjoy home-cooked goodness fresh from the organic garden and eggs courtesy of the Heathen Hill hens. Spend your time in between classes doing what brings you into balance. Take a swim, do a handstand or two off the dock, practice walking meditation in the labyrinth, admire the flower beds, play Bocci/badminton/horseshoes, or simply lounge under a shady tree with a good book. Explore the middle path if you wish to sip a glass of wine in the hot-tub, star-gaze and toast marshmallows on the campfire. Fall asleep in the quaint farmhouse or snug in your tent to the sound of crickets. Wake up refreshed and ready for more.

About Marisa

Marisa teaches vinyasa yoga at Kula Yoga Project, Bend & Bloom, Shambhala Yoga & Dance, and Om Factory.
Her classes are slow-flowing but intense, creative but safe, challenging but never competitive.
After completing her 200-hour certification in 2006, she found her way to Kula, where she learned to elongate the breath cycles and take a moment to let herself be in really intense places while finding comfort in the sonorous ujjayi breath in the room.
She has studied a good deal of anatomy, first with Neuromuscular Therapist Susan Hefner and then with yoga anatomy educator Leslie Kaminoff. She completed a 75-hour advanced training with Schuyler Grant in 2009, who has been one of her most influential teachers. Schuyler, along with her fellow teachers of Kula Yoga Project, have helped her learn how to bring alignment and bandha work into the vinyasa flow. By the time this retreat rolls around, Marisa will have finished her 500-hour certification with Alison West, who is also teaching Marisa yoga for backcare.
In her teaching, Marisa manages to geek out on alignment in just the right dose as to not disrupt the flow. And through this flow, she passes onto her students what yoga has given her: the use of the breath as a bridge between the body and the mind, as well as a way to imbue action with mindfulness and heart through this moving meditation. Each day, her student amaze, humble, and inspire her, and for this she is grateful.

Transportation is separate. Last time, we shared the cost rental cars, gas, and tolls which came to $90/person. If you have a car and would be willing to car pool, please let me know. Car owners get hooked up with a $25 discount on the retreat and they don’t have to chip in for gas or tolls.

Start Date: June 4, 2010
End Date: June 6, 2010
