About Marissa

Marisa marries anatomical geekery seamlessly with everything that Kula Yoga Project founder Schuyler Grant has taught her about putting together a delicious recipe for meditative metronomic vinyasa called Kula Flow, which includes purposeful sequencing, creative transitions, cleansing pranayama, and sweating your heart out. Marisa’s 500-hour training with Alison West provided her the opportunity to delve even deeper into alignment, learn to teach Yoga for Backcare, and where she enjoyed the ropes certification portion of the program so much that she commissioned a rope wall to be built in her own living room. All of this highly detailed instruction supports her work with her Basics classes and Brand New Beginner workshops, in that she can offer her students solid fundamentals in healthy alignment which will help them cultivate a safe and sustainable yoga practice. The same goes for her challenging Kula Flow classes where the intensity is well supported by precise alignment cues. Discover all of this in her classes here in NYC or on her retreats to Tulum, Umbria, the Catskills, and beyond. Learn more: marisasako.com

Fall asleep in the quaint farmhouse or snug in your tent to the sound of crickets. Wake up refreshed and ready for more.

About Marisa

In Marisa’s class, you can expect emphasis on creative transitions to keep the practice interesting and innovative. She manages to geek out on alignment in just the right dose as not to disrupt the flow. After completing her 200-hour teacher training in 2006, she found Kula Yoga Project where she first learned to slow down and let herself be in really intense places while finding comfort in the sonorous sound of the collective ujjayi breath in the room. After a few years of practice with Schuyler Grant, she participated in her 75-hour intensive training. You’ll get a healthy serving of anatomical information and breath instruction needed to free you up so you can sweat and flow safely and delve into the deeper layers of your practice. She first studied anatomy with neuromuscular therapist Susan Hefner, later with Leslie Kaminoff. In 2010, she completed her 500-hour certification and certificate in Yoga for Backcare with preeminent alignment stickler Alison West. She tries to pass on to her students what yoga has given her: breath as a bridge between the body and mind, and the ability to imbue action with mindfulness and heart through moving meditation.

Your check for the full amount reserves your spot.

Transportation is separate. If you have a car and would be willing to car pool, please let me know. Car owners get hooked up with a $25 discount on the retreat and they don’t have to chip in for gas or tolls. In the event that not enough car owners sign up, car rental will be arranged.

About Marisa

Marisa teaches vinyasa yoga at Kula Yoga Project, Bend & Bloom, Shambhala Yoga & Dance, and Om Factory.
Her classes are slow-flowing but intense, creative but safe, challenging but never competitive.
After completing her 200-hour certification in 2006, she found her way to Kula, where she learned to elongate the breath cycles and take a moment to let herself be in really intense places while finding comfort in the sonorous ujjayi breath in the room.
She has studied a good deal of anatomy, first with Neuromuscular Therapist Susan Hefner and then with yoga anatomy educator Leslie Kaminoff. She completed a 75-hour advanced training with Schuyler Grant in 2009, who has been one of her most influential teachers. Schuyler, along with her fellow teachers of Kula Yoga Project, have helped her learn how to bring alignment and bandha work into the vinyasa flow. By the time this retreat rolls around, Marisa will have finished her 500-hour certification with Alison West, who is also teaching Marisa yoga for backcare.
In her teaching, Marisa manages to geek out on alignment in just the right dose as to not disrupt the flow. And through this flow, she passes onto her students what yoga has given her: the use of the breath as a bridge between the body and the mind, as well as a way to imbue action with mindfulness and heart through this moving meditation. Each day, her student amaze, humble, and inspire her, and for this she is grateful.

Transportation is separate. Last time, we shared the cost rental cars, gas, and tolls which came to $90/person. If you have a car and would be willing to car pool, please let me know. Car owners get hooked up with a $25 discount on the retreat and they don’t have to chip in for gas or tolls.

About Marissa

I relish the moment in warrior III when the first bead of sweat drips off the tip of the nose and splashes onto the mat, yet concentration remains unbroken. In my class, you can expect emphasis on creative transitions to keep the practice interesting and innovative. I manage to geek out on alignment in just the right dose as not to disrupt the flow. After completing my 200-hour teacher training in 2006, I found Kula Yoga Project where I first learned to slow down and let myself be in really intense places while finding comfort in the sonorous sound of the collective ujjayi breath in the room. You’ll get a healthy serving of anatomical information and breath instruction needed to free you up so you can sweat and flow safely and delve into the deeper layers of your practice. I first studied anatomy with neuromuscular therapist Susan Hefner, later with Leslie Kaminoff. By late 2010, I will have completed my 500-hour certification and certificate in Yoga for Backcare with preeminent alignment stickler Alison West. I try to pass on to my students what yoga has given me: breath as a bridge between the body and mind, and the ability to imbue action with mindfulness and heart through moving meditation.

About Marisa

Marisa teaches vinyasa yoga at Bend & Bloom right here in Park Slope, Shambhala Yoga & Dance in Prospect Heights, Kula Yoga Project, and Yoga Effects on the Eastside of Manhattan.
Her classes are slow-flowing but intense, creative but safe, challenging but never competitive. She completed her 200-hour training with Dana Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi at Laughing Lotus. She went on to study with Neuromuscular Therapist Susan Hefner and yoga anatomy educator Leslie Kaminoff. Over the past few years, she has been practicing regularly with Schuyler Grant and the teachers of Kula Yoga Project, who have helped her learn how to bring alignment and bandha work into the vinyasa flow. This year she has begun practicing with Alison West, which greatly influences her teaching these days as well. Marisa tries to pass on to her students what yoga has given her: an understanding of how to use the breath as a bridge between the body and mind; how to imbue action with mindfulness and heart; and how to quiet the mind through moving meditation. Each day her students amaze, inspire, and humble her. For this, she is grateful.

Samadhi in the Country – June 5-7

Title: Samadhi in the Country
Location: Heathen Hill
Description: Citta vrtti in the city got you down? Ditch those agitations of the mind and come away with us out of town!

Take the day off on Friday and we’ll head upstate to Heathen Hill to enjoy a weekend of juicy vinyasa flow, delectable home-cooked meals, lying in the grass with a good book, and dozing off to the sound of crickets. And don’t forget to pack a bathing suit for the swimming hole and hot tub!

About Marisa

Marisa is a local girl lucky enough to have a mom who was teaching her to walk on her hands shortly after learning how to walk on her feet! Throughout her life, she has dabbled in all sorts of movement, but nothing has been able to really inhabit a space in her heart like vinyasa practice.

It was this love that brought her to Laughing Lotus College of Yoga where she completed her teacher training with Dana Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi. Each day, she wakes up feeling honored and fortunate to be practicing and teaching yoga. Her instruction is greatly influenced by her on-going studies in anatomy and kinesiology, marrying detailed descriptions of alignment and encouragement to flow with grace. She believes that moving with mindfulness and compassion for oneself on the mat leads to moving about the world in the same manner.
