Divine Play in the Great Outdoors with Brenna Padesky & Rikard Skogberg – June 25-27 2010

Title: Divine Play in the Great Outdoors with Brenna Padesky & Rikard Skogberg- June 25-27
Location: Heathen Hill
Description: Lila (or Leela) is a Sanskirt word which literally translates to mean “play”. Discover how a sense of play (and a sense of humor) can put the joy back into your asana practice. Whether it’s standing on your feet, standing on your hands, working by yourself, or working with a fellow yogi, lightness in your heart and smile on your face can take you miles in understanding how your practice on the mat ripples out to create fulfillment in your life.

Join us for a delicious weekend away from the city. We will meet up late Friday morning and road trip upstate to Heathen Hill in Franklin, NY. Once there, enjoy a weekend of sweaty morning vinyasa with Rikard, evening slow flow and meditation with Brenna, and a taste of Thai Yoga massage threaded throughout. In your free time you can jump in the swimming hole, chase the resident chickens, or catch up on your reading.

About Brenna and Rikard

Rikard Skogberg has a Masters Degree in Social Work and certification in various styles of yoga. He has been a yoga teacher for the past 8 years, currently with a full time practice in NYC. Rikard’s practice, which offers both individual classes as well as group classes, incorporates alignment based asanas with breath as a healing tool.
Rikard is also a Certified Biodynamic Breathwork Practitioner. With a background in dance and theater, Rikard has studied healing drama therapy, dance therapy and creative arts therapy. An integral component of his practice is the union of body with mind and the effect this connection has on healing.

Brenna Padesky studied at Laughing Lotus under the guidance of Bryn Chrisman and Alison Cramer. She is currently managing and teaching at Reflections Yoga in midtown Manhattan.

Keith and Katie “Bringin’ the Heat” – August 6 – 8 2010

Title: Keith and Katie “Bringin’ the Heat”
Location: Heathen Hill

Description:

Join Katie and Keith for a weekend of summertime yoga fun. What do you want to work on? What is confusing, unclear? What’s just so fun that you want to do it over and over again? Let us know, and that’s what we’ll teach. That’s right–we’ll be taking requests for this one, and we’ll have plenty of time to work and play! We’re looking forward to a weekend that hits all of the good stuff in asana — standing poses, backbends, forward bends, inversions, and restorative — as well as pranayama and meditation. The food you’ll get will be grown right on the property. At breakfast, your dinner might still be growing. How’s that for local? Some of you know Lippy–she’ll be doing the cooking.

Here’s the Schedule:

Friday night: Yoga on the restorative side, followed by dinner.
Saturday: Breakfast, 3 hour yoga class, then lunch, time to yourself (hot tub? swimmin’ hole? play with the chickens?), and another 2 hour class. Dinner.
Sunday: 3 hour yoga class, Brunch, and we’re out!

About Keith and Katie

Katie Malachuk has been teaching with YogaWorks since 2005. She received her 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher certification through YogaWorks; as such she balances the movement of vinyasa with a focus on alignment and attention to the breath. She also includes yoga philosophy and seated meditation in every class. Katie received her BA from Harvard and MBA from Stanford, and she is a certified life coach and holistic health counselor. She is the author of two books on how to make the college and business school application processes into a journey of self-discovery, using yoga philosophy and life coaching. Visit  her website at www.katiemalachuk.com.

Keith Yzquierdo’s classes are alignment based. His teaching incorporates mindful movement, deliberate anatomical instructions, careful breath work, and deep concentration. Keith has a degree in mechanical engineering, has studied classical piano extensively, and is a ceramic artist. His teaching is influenced by the exactitude of his engineering past, as well as the fluidity of his music and art. He trained with YogaWorks in NYC under the guidance of Chrissy Carter. He currently studies with Carrie Owerko and Genny Kapuler. Visit his website at www.keithyzq.com.

Samadhi in the Country – June 5-7

Title: Samadhi in the Country
Location: Heathen Hill
Description: Citta vrtti in the city got you down? Ditch those agitations of the mind and come away with us out of town!

Take the day off on Friday and we’ll head upstate to Heathen Hill to enjoy a weekend of juicy vinyasa flow, delectable home-cooked meals, lying in the grass with a good book, and dozing off to the sound of crickets. And don’t forget to pack a bathing suit for the swimming hole and hot tub!

About Marisa

Marisa is a local girl lucky enough to have a mom who was teaching her to walk on her hands shortly after learning how to walk on her feet! Throughout her life, she has dabbled in all sorts of movement, but nothing has been able to really inhabit a space in her heart like vinyasa practice.

It was this love that brought her to Laughing Lotus College of Yoga where she completed her teacher training with Dana Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi. Each day, she wakes up feeling honored and fortunate to be practicing and teaching yoga. Her instruction is greatly influenced by her on-going studies in anatomy and kinesiology, marrying detailed descriptions of alignment and encouragement to flow with grace. She believes that moving with mindfulness and compassion for oneself on the mat leads to moving about the world in the same manner.

Relax, Rejuvenate & Revitalize: A Weekend Getaway with Vivekan of Bodhisattva Yoga – July 24-26

Title: Relax, Rejuvenate & Revitalize: A Weekend Getaway with Vivekan of Bodhisattva Yoga
Location: Heathen Hill
Description: Vivekan, founder and director of Park Slope, Brooklyn’s Bodhisattva Yoga, invites you to a weekend of relaxation, rejuvenation and revitalization. Though this can be just a getaway, it’s opportunity to cultivate mental and physical wellbeing. Set at Heathen Hill Guest and Retreat Center, in the Catskills’ peaceful and natural settings, you will learn and practice tools for relaxing the body and clearing the mind. Through the practice of yoga, along with the natural, supportive setting and environment, you will experience the body and mind in the moment. Becoming aware of our body, speech and mind, we will witness how we unknowingly create suffering. This knowledge, along with Vivekan’s instruction and the natural setting, will aid in an attitude and perspective shift. We can then discover how yoga can help us build genuine, harmonious relationships with others by engendering a spirit of generosity, ethical conduct, patience, enthusiasm, mindfulness and insight.

About Vivekan

Vivekan (AKA, William D. Mejia, Jr., B.S., E-RYT) is a New York City native and the founder/director of Park Slope, Brooklyn’s Bodhisattva Yoga. He received certification under Jayadeva, a direct disciple of Swami Satchidananda. Vivekan credits Rodney Yee as an asana and flow-sequence giant from whom he learned a great deal. “I also must credit my venerable and sagely mentor, Serge Ledan, MD, as a peerless friend and one who has completed the trainings. His empirical mind has helped me yoke the essence of Buddhism and the utility of yoga.” Vivekan’s exposure to eclectic yoga styles, along with his home practice, has led to his unique style, which he terms as Inspired FlowsTM. “My Inspired FlowsTM differ from class to class – I never come in with a script; it is based on the premise that fun and effort are not mutually exclusive. One can be interested in, and mindful of, form and breath and yet not be restrained by orthodoxy.” Vivekan has instructed thousands of students in the New York City area; he has also worked extensively with individuals coping with hard-drug addictions, HIV, AIDS and their respective difficulties and treatments. He has attended to under-served populations such as seniors and individuals with physical, visual and hearing disabilities. He has led numerous workshops, seminars and retreats based upon wellness, yoga & meditation.

Vivekan operates Bodhisattva Yoga as an ecologically and socially responsible business – using recycled products and wind-energy, while hosting monthly activist meetings called Engagement for Change. Aspiring to Right-Livelihood, he now terms himself a sustainopreneur (and is a founding member of AEREAS) as he seeks to marry his entrepreneurial spirit with his concern for ecological and social issues. He is currently in a graduate program for Environmental Management; and, his next project of interest is tentatively titled, Bodhisattva Group International (BGI). BGI is an envisioned organization intent on solving problems facing habitat, species and humanity on a global level. BGI’s function will be to meet the increasing demand in eco-tourism and holistic wellness while addressing key ecological and social difficulties unique to locality
